		<description>A Manifesto
S P A C E . P L A C E . B O D Y .—

How I engage with design &#38;amp; architecture is through an intention to always consider the interaction of place, space &#38;amp; body and the perceived and constructed borders between them. Borders manifest in many ways. They delineate such binaries between inside &#38;amp; outside, between race, gender, nations, between belonging and not belonging.

Architecture &#38;amp; the built / designed world have been used as tools to enact these borders. At times these tools have been weaponized for harmful outcomes.

To address this weaponization, we must examine how the process of design has been informed by the frameworks of colonization: historic systems of oppression [capitalism, ableism, white supremacy and cis-hetero-patriarchy] that have led to wrong relations between people [themselves and others], between people and nature, and the built &#38;amp; natural environments. We must examine the root causes to the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual scarring we see on lands, cities, communities and its people. This is necessary for healing to occur on individual and communal levels.

We can deconstruct design at a built and relational level. And ask what is the alternative to the status quo of design that is mostly responsive &#38;amp; complacent to existing oppressive power systems?

It could look like built design that is opposed to deadly resource extraction &#38;amp; design that disregards the health of the land it is built on and all life that the land nourishes. It could look like built design that reciprocates any resources that it does use. It could look like relations and design practices that center those effected most directly and give them the power to steer.

It could look like a practice that values knowledge beyond “expert” and “novice” hierarchies. And one that recognizes that inhabitants of a community are inherent experts of their own space; A practice that is interdisciplinary, requiring all fields of organized knowledge to participate; A practice that redefines success beyond monetary profit &#38;amp; corporate wealth; A practice that encourages a redistribution of power and sovereignty of life and creative expression; A practice that values all forms of labor and ensures that labor is consensual and reciprocated.

“Imagine if a developer, eyeing open land for a
shopping mall, had to ask the golden rod, meadowlarks, and the monarch butterflies for permission to take their homeland. What if he had to abide by the answer? Why not?”

-Robin Wall Kimmerer
It’s important for me to deepen my practice of acknowledging PLACE &#38;amp; CONTEXT. We are always at the forefront of many historical, cultural and ecological shifts. Much of our future lies in contending with the harm that’s been done, and sustaining the love, resilience and spiritual stamina in the face of this harm. Our future lies in both restoring what once was &#38;amp; creating what works for us now. This requires critical rethinking of our relationships to each other, to earth, to time and space. The frameworks we work in as designers, are either 1. complicit and uphold systemic oppression, or 2. deconstruct and resist it, or 3. create new liberating and restorative ways of being.

For the design field to truly become relevant in liberation work, it needs to fundamentally transform itself. Design, architecture, planning and the like have been used as weapons against the people &#38;amp; earth. They have all been very reactive to systems of oppression: prisons are built, border walls extended, biodiverse habitats turned to concrete, signs and symbols drawn to delineate the binaries of belonging. It’s not only physically BUILT design that is harmful, it is also the PROCESSES of design.

For example, even the most social justice conscious spaces suffer from harmful relationship patterns, whether it’s lopsided power &#38;amp; labor distribution, a culture of gossip &#38;amp; polite dishonesty, a culture of not valuing differences, making false promises to communities, or not addressing abuses &#38;amp; grievances in a timely and sensitive way. I believe that it has to do with internalized oppression and our unique ways of being with one another that are often influenced by our own traumas. Our healing is strategic! It gives us the solid foundation to support a healthy stamina for liberation work.

This brings me to Adrienne Maree Brown’s work on “Emergent Strategy”. Although this short essay wouldn’t be able to give the book of the same title justice, It is important to summarize some of its contents. Emergent Strategy is about creating large scale movements and changes through the small scale. Brown emphasizes that change happens first and foremost at the interpersonal level, and that we can look to nature to learn how to be in right relationship with each other.

Brown finds inspiration in mycelium for interconnectedness and detoxification; in ants for cooperative work and collective sustainability; in ferns for fractal awareness and small scale change; in wavicles for valuing uncertainty, duality, both the process and the outcome; in starling murmurations for collective leadership and adaptability; in dandelions for resilience and decentralization.
Related principles of emergent strategy include:

+Focusing on critical connection rather than critical mass.

+That there is always enough time for the right work.

+That there is a conversation in the room that only the people in it at this moment can have. Find it.

+Trust the people [and they will become trustworthy].

+Move at the speed of trust.

+That resilience is about how we heal from harm and conflict. Resilience is about transformative justice.

In the context of the community design, I am most drawn to the strategies of transformative justice and generative conflict that Brown advocates for. I believe cultivating these skills are crucial for the design process, as well as built design. These strategies ask: How does our notion of justice move away from punishment and isolation [basically the belief that people who do bad things are not capable of change], to the belief that people are capable of changing, growing, and of healing? How can conflict generate something life changing in good ways? In an effort to answer some of these questions I’ve gathered some thoughts from my experiences, studies, workshops and conversations around the topic:

Conflict can be generative when…

There are boundaries and agreements to the conversation, like only talking about root causes &#38;amp; issue at hand.

Guiding questions include: What was the harm? Who was harmed//who is harming? What are the needs and responsibilities of all involved? How can this be prevented?

When…

instead of immediate response, practice PAUSE and SACRED LISTENING. This helps being a witness to all perspectives with more clarity. [Mediators can help with maintaining neutrality].

When…

We remember the wholeness of each others humanity, which includes our good qualities.

When…

We work on and take the time to build TRUST [through showing up/consistency] because it is foundational for courageous honest conversations, and to honestly express our regrets and our ailments as well as ask for support [combating the shame around the need for belonging, and shame of intimacy, dependency and difference]

When…

the emotional labor of all those involved is RECIPROCAL, CONSENSUAL &#38;amp; VALUED.

When…

all those involved are ready, willing, able and COMMITTED to unpack and work through the discomfort...always with compassion &#38;amp; love.

Lastly, can you imagine yourself adapting to &#38;amp; combining the different roles of designer, land steward, healer, social justice facilitator, and truth teller ? Why? Why not?

During my three month artist residency at the Santa Fe Art Institute, I spent a lot of my time unlearning what it means to visit a place temporarily. I focused on understanding place from local indigenous perspectives, and explored the idea of “The Scales of Healing”.
For the culminating event, I utilized the exterior architecture of the institute, the interior of my studio, and a poetry reading to create a multi scalar and multi dimensional piece, showcasing my research, curation, writing and visualization around the topics of: 1. Indigenous &#38;amp; Diaspora Solidarity 2. Expanding Consent

3. The Scales of Relationality 4. Grieving &#38;amp; Public Memory.

THE SCALES OF HEALINThe scales are inextricably linked from individual to collective to towns to cities, from intellectual belief to embodied practice, from small to large, from past to present, from land to body, and vice versa in all other combinations. When we work on mending one aspect all others are affected. We all have unique access points to the different scales &#38;amp; forms of healing. All of it is needed, precisely in its diversity. We are all empowered to shift vulnerably &#38;amp; courageously towards the life affirming.
A note on background aerial photographs: They represent unconsenting places of extraction: sites of oil, coal &#38;amp; uranium mining, sites of constructed border walls, and sites of invasive human “recreation”. Base photographs by Fazal Sheikh &#38;amp; John Moore.

Supplemental gratitude text for

SCALES OF TRAUMA // SCALES OF HEALING&#38;nbsp; video
I am Thankful to all my teachers…

The knowledge I crave is all around me...the people, the plants, our bodies, our collective bodies, our earth body…

The knowledge I crave is deep, ancient, futuristic and slow. The slowness of a feeling. The slowness needed to learn from silence. The slowness to notice how the same messages show up repeatedly in different ways::: like how trees burn, how pain shows up in the body, how some new friendships feel very old and familiar, how the same lessons appear in a book and in the words of a stranger at the waiting room, how sinking it feels to stay when I know I should leave, how alive I feel when I allow myself to change, to grow…

This slowness propels me deeper into a self knowledge, deeper into an excavation of forgotten stories. Some of the most important work I will ever do may never be witnessed, but felt deep inside myself: like unlearning the harmful patterns of how I relate to sadness, or facing my shame or guilt so I can make my way to grief. Where there isn’t reconciliation there can still be healing. There can still be healing.

Like a wise spiral, we will go through cycles of understanding different parts of our wounds in darkness, we will arc in unseen fragments of beginnings and ends, yet to circle into remembering our wholeness. Our spirals repeat, and our shapes become clearer and more known. Our spirals coil and we know the medicine because we know the wound. Our coils spring &#38;amp; move in new directions and we heal. Our coils spring. And we heal. Where there isn’t reconciliation there can still be healing.

For this piece I created several different versions of the word "ithkr" ~ “remember” in the Arabic language. I explored different permutations of the word through traditional calligraphy and my own writing aesthetic. My use of language is abstracted through the arrangement &#38;amp; layering of letter forms. The result is primarily a visual meditation. The image asserts a sense of rumination, invocation &#38;amp; bridging that accompanies the act of remembrance regardless if one can read Arabic.

		<description>B U I L D I N G&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; A D A P T A T I O NHot to Cold : An Odyssey of Archtectural Adaptation2016 &#124; Sculpture, Book Art &#38;amp; Museum Exhibit Design &#124; The National Building Museum in DC

This project was a collaboration between the National Building Museum &#38;amp; Bjarke Ingels Group to present a dazzling round-up of adaptive architecture in extreme environments around the world. 60 built and conceptual projects done by the firm show how structures can become holistic ecosystems of both economic and environmental benefit. My role was to assist in exhibit design development and execution, to build scaled architectural
models, work on all graphics and coordination efforts.
Our team turned the entire second floor arcade into the exhibition design. Organized like a journey around the world in 800 feet, the exhibition takes visitors through an architectural focused body of work traveling from the warmest to the coldest climate to explain the conditions that have influenced the projects. Each of the 76 arches serves as the frame for the story of how 60 projects were shaped by their contextual conditions including their culture, geography,
program, economy, regulations, politics, legislation, and climate.

2010 - ongoing &#124; Community &#124; California &#38;amp; Beyond

I have been actively co-organizing &#38;amp; participating in community spaces to rethink what collective healing can look like. Many of these gatherings were private or in ceremony. Below is documentation of some of the public offerings that included everything from art popups, skillshares, free community resources, health &#38;amp; healing practices, poetry nights and more. As organizers we are in the continual process of improving accessibilty &#38;amp; hope to grow from these learning edges.

Always Becoming .
Constantly Dying .
2018 - 2019 &#124; Ink &#38;amp; Digital Illustrations&#38;nbsp;

I made these drawings after work shifts to validate my magic, growth, feelings &#38;amp; pleasure.
They are a
series of distinct illustrations that affirm the scales of our relationships, dependency and unity : One’s relationship to self, to other humans, and to non human siblings.

They range in dimension from 7’’ x 7’’ to approximately 12’’ x 12’’ .

		<description>H E A L&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; T H I S&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; P L A C EWhat does it mean to heal on the scale of a town/city/community?
A Brief Introduction to Santa Barbara:

Santa Barbara is a microcosm of coastal California in its diversity, unique potentials, and challenges. Physically, it is a small town nestled between the mountains and ocean with only one major highway running through it. Although known as a wealthy vacation &#38;amp; retirement town, you will also find the social infrastructure that makes this possible; poor and working class farmers, educators, service &#38;amp; retail industry workers. This is just one example of how the iconic image of Santa Barbara belies its complex realities.

The built environment has played a major role in shaping what is modern Santa Barbara. The signature materiality and architecture of Spanish colonial buildings hold the contradictions of immense beauty and pain. The city as we now know it, was built around the Presidio and Spanish Mission. The Mission &#38;amp; its revival style buildings in relation to the landscape has proven successful in attracting people to continue living and shaping this community.

Through the use of material and process like: adobe, mosaic, strict zoning, density &#38;amp; height limits, the building entities in Santa Barbara pride themselves in maintaining its “cultural heritage &#38;amp; authentic neighborhood feel”. However, the underlying assumptions of this vision of preservation, and how it intersects with issues of equity &#38;amp; massive environmental, economic, political, demographic, and mobility changes often go unexamined.

The question moving forward is how do we address this in a manner that is considerate of the root causes of systemic oppression in all arenas of civic life? The fear of confronting rapid changes is tied with the fear of losing what is working for some. So how do we engage with our diverse ecologies of expertise to address our issues? One aspect of what makes Santa Barbara a vital study is that the city is small enough where small changes can be felt by all locals, and big enough where we can clearly see how local solutions could be applied elsewhere in the nation.

I believe we will find some answers in the excavation of forgotten wisdom and histories. For example, Syuxtun is the name of one of the main ancestral villages of Chumash indigenous inhabitants of what we now call Santa Barbara. Little to none of this narrative is ever evoked through spoken, written, built or memorialized history in the city. Yet much of the natural infrastructure that interacts with built infrastructure was &#38;amp; is originally tended to by Chumash people and their deep knowledge of place. In general, we need to ask what it would look like to integrate different forms of knowledge within the built &#38;amp; designed world to ensure the safety and joy of the next generations of Santa Barbarans?&#38;nbsp;

This is a participatory research project in Santa Barbara. After having many informal discussions with local colleagues and friends about the complex dynamics in Santa Barbara [SB], I decided to create a call out to gather more stories, asking some of these questions:

&#60;img width="1700" height="2200" width_o="1700" height_o="2200" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/9e460d1de4a547d1fce1113c2bccb438c161452917392faea9db053d4494c099/2---Copy-copy.jpg" data-mid="66243189" border="0" data-scale="81" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/9e460d1de4a547d1fce1113c2bccb438c161452917392faea9db053d4494c099/2---Copy-copy.jpg" /&#62;

︎What would it look like to honor land &#38;amp; indigenous Chumash roots &#38;amp; lifeways in this city?

︎Can you share any important forgotten SB history?

︎

How do we restore right relations within ourselves, between communities, and between communities &#38;amp; the land in SB? What needs to be unlearned, healed and HOW?

︎

What are the obvious and not so obvious

binaries/divides/borders/dualities in SB and how do we reconcile them?

︎

How do we honor all of our intersections in relation to place?

Are there spaces in SB that already embody a sort of freedom to you?

︎

Where and how do you access your freedom here?

︎

What would it mean to memorialize struggles for liberation in this city?

︎

What are alternate ways [than for example old Spanish days fiesta] of celebrating and re-visioning place?

︎

What would a truth and healing act look like?

︎

What would a decolonized SB look and feel like to you [dream BIG &#38;amp; BRAVE!]?

︎

What would initial steps there be?

︎

What would the landscape, buildings, and interactions be like?

In asking these questions, I hoped to foster conversations about addressing some of the big changes happening to the community with more urgency. From this call out I was able to compile important wisdom
relating to the interface of SB’s native &#38;amp; natural environment to today’s built environment.

Below is documentation of initial efforts of visioning &#38;amp; mobilizing for a decolonized Santa Barbara in digital &#38;amp; physical forms. The installation [pictured right] is gathered from community members, allies, and news archives. The display briefly introduces:

1. Context/history of Santa Barbara, illustrating a truthful reckoning and why decolonization︎︎︎reindigenization is imperative for a liberated future for all .

2. Manifestos for decolonization︎︎︎reindigenization&#38;nbsp; .

3. Methods &#38;amp; spells for embodying change [through liberated relationship//liberated love &#38;amp; generative conflict] .
